What is VPN Gate?

Created at the University of Tsukuba in Japan, VPN Gate is an open source VPN project that provides secure VPN networks to Internet users anywhere in the world. As an academic project, VPN Gate – sometimes written as VPNGate – is free to use.

VPN Gate also focuses on anonymity and privacy. User does not have to register to use the service and anonymous connections are accepted. This can appeal to Internet users who want to increase anonymity while browsing the web, but still want a free and open source VPN solution.

How does VPN Gate work?

VPN Gate’s network infrastructure is entirely provided by volunteers who allow their VPN servers to be part of this global experiment. Without volunteers, VPN Gate would no longer exist. However, on the other hand, it also makes VPN Gate something of a security risk.

From a technical standpoint, VPN Gate works with several VPN protocols including SSL-VPN, L2TP / IPsec, OpenVPN, and Microsoft SSTP. This is what allows VPN Gate to be used on iOS and macOS devices, as well as Windows and Android devices.

To use the VPN Gate platform, users also need to install the SoftEther VPN software. This open source software is another University of Tsukuba project that allows users to connect to one of the VPN Gate servers located around the world.

However, if you plan to connect to an iOS or macOS device, you’ll need to download specific VPN software for these platforms. OpenVPN is an obvious choice.

• No user registration required.
• Each VPN server has a dynamic IP address. Therefore, it may change over random time
• The VPN server appears and disappears at any time. Therefore, the IP address may not always be connected to the VPN server.
