Inserting an image into a document in Google Docs isn’t complicated, but adding a caption to an image is much more “trouble”. Here are some methods for you to create and add captions to images in your Google Docs documents.
Image captions with in-line text
The simplest way for you to add captions to Google Docs images is to use the “inline” format and insert text below the image. The operation is as follows:
Click once on the image you want to add a caption to. Immediately, a blue border will appear around the image. Looking down at the bottom left corner of the image, you will see there are three options, click on “Print Line” (In line).
Now just place your cursor below the image and start typing caption text. Of course, you can still size, align, and select typefaces using the top toolbar as usual.
Annotate photos with drawings
If you need more flexibility, you can choose to annotate images with drawings. For this option, you will start the operation from when the image has not been inserted in the document.
Place the cursor at the location in the document where you want to insert the image and caption. Then click Insert > Drawing > New (Insert > Drawing > New).
Once the image is in the drawing, click “Text Box” on the toolbar.
Draw a text box and enter your caption in it. You can format your text using the font options in the toolbar if you want. You can then also drag the text box to position it so that it evenly matches the image.
Click “Save and Close” (Save and close). The image and caption you just created will appear in the document.
If you need to edit the annotation, click on the drawing and select “Edit” on the toolbar.
Annotate images with tables
Another simple way to assign a caption to an image is to put it all in a table, and the caption will be in the box below the image. You can then remove the table border and the captions will be displayed in the most natural way.
To get started, place the cursor where you want to insert the image and caption. Click Insert > Table (Insert > Table) and select the table “1 x 2“. Immediately on the document will appear a table containing one column and two rows (cells).
In the top box, insert an image. If you already have an image in your document, you can drag it into this box.
In the box below, enter a caption for the image. You can highlight the text and use the toolbar to format as usual.
Next, right click on the table and select “Table Properties”, or you can also click Format > Table > Table Properties (Format > Table > Table Properties) from the toolbar.
In the “Table Border” (Table Border), you choose “0 pt” and click “OK“.
You should now have a hidden table with images and captions underneath.
