How to connect an Android phone with Ethernet

If you have an Android tablet or smartphone and want to use a wired Ethernet connection, it’s easy to do.

While the option below still works for many Android device models, there’s a new, better way to connect to Ethernet. Using a Type-C hub can add a variety of ports including HDMI, VGA, Ethernet, legacy USB standards, and an SD port. Type-C hubs also have much better compatibility.

Requirements for connecting Android to Ethernet

You must install Android Marshmallow 6.0.1 above.

To see which version of your device you are running, go to Settings> About Device.

Previous Android versions need to be rooted, since Marshmallow 6.0.1 will no longer need it.

Next, an OTG to Ethernet converter will be needed.

OTG stands for On-The-Go and simply plugs into Android’s micro USB port. It is mainly used to copy files to external storage like flash drive but can also be used for LAN internet connection.

The Ethernet adapter transmits the signal over the network. These products can be purchased separately or purchase a combo of different conversion cables.

Not all converters are compatible with every Android device and need to be verified that it works with your device.

Although there are almost no problems, the processor in the adapter and the phone / tablet must be compatible. Just make sure an adapter will work with your Android device before using it.

See what kind of port your device uses, old Micro-USB or new Type-C.

Most older Android smartphones use Micro-USB with the new Type-C port currently available on the Galaxy S10, S20 and similar high-end devices.

Most Android devices just need to be plugged in and will automatically connect. Turn off Wifi to connect Ethernet alone on the phone.

Some devices require the device to be installed in airplane mode, which is dependent on the phone’s ROM.

Connecting an Android smartphone or tablet to an Ethernet line is easy to do with Android Marshmallow and above.

While most won’t have any problems, the phone or tablet must have the drivers for the processor in the Ethernet adapter to work.

Each manufacturer customizes the Android operating system for their device and can remove or add drivers from the device.

Just remember to read the converter’s specifications and reviews to make sure it works with your device.
