What is the Windows.old folder?

You can delete the Windows.old folder to free up storage space.
If you recently upgraded to a new version of Windows, the Windows.old folder will appear containing your previous version of Windows installation. This setting can be used to revert to the previous configuration if you wish.
If you don’t plan to go back and in fact very few people do – you can completely delete it and get some free space back.

How to delete the Windows.old folder on your computer
1. In the Start menu search box, type in the phrase “cleanup” and then click “Disk Cleanup” in the displayed results.

2. If you see the Drive Selection dialog box, select the C: drive and click “OK.”
3. Click “Clean up system files.”

In the Disk Cleanup window, click “Clean up system files” to start the cleaning process.
4. You may need to select the C: drive a second time and click “OK.” You will then need to wait while the program scans your drive.
5. Tick the checkbox “Previous Windows installations” in the list of deleted items

Select “Previous Windows installation” to delete the Windows.old folder.
6. Click “OK”.
