How to embed files and calendar events in a Google Docs document

Attaching related files or calendar events in a Google Docs document may sound like a complicated task, but it’s actually incredibly easy. With Smart Chip, you can quickly embed files from Google Drive, Sheets, Slides, or Google Calendar events into your Google Docs documents.

Initially, Smart Chips only offered Google Docs users the ability to mention a specific object right in the document to embed their contact card. However, now, this feature has been upgraded, supporting embedding both files and events in documents, along with a series of related options. Let’s find out the details right here.

Embed a file or calendar event in Google Docs

Attaching a file or Google Calendar event to a Google Docs document isn’t complicated. You just need to enter the symbol “@” and immediately see a list of suggestions and options in the drop-down menu.

Looking up from the top of the list, you’ll see options listed including people, files, and events.

To narrow this list down, you can enter a few more related characters after “@“. Once you’ve found what you want, just click to embed the item in the document, Overall this is similar to when you want to mention someone from your friends list in a post, comment on social networks.

Once the corresponding item has been attached to the document, you and anyone with access to the document can simply move the pointer over the item to display the Smart Chip. Immediately, there will be a list of extremely useful related options for managing this attachment.

Using Smart Chips

Smart Chip options can make viewing files and sharing events easier than ever.

Place your cursor over an embedded file to display Smart Chips. The information displayed will tell you who the owner of the file is and whether any changes have been recently made to the file.

In the middle, you can click to open a preview of the file. This will open a small window on the right with a preview.

If you share a document that contains an embedded file, there will also be a specific option that allows you to also share the embedded file so that others can also view and access it.

In case you cannot share the embedded file, people viewing or collaborating on the document can also request access (Request Access) using Smart Chips.

The number of Smart Chip options for managing Google Calendar events attached to documents is generally not as extensive as for files, but still very useful.

First, you’ll see the name of the event along with a specific date and time. Click the event name to open it in Google Calendar.
