How to enable Google Assistant on iPhone using back tap feature

Although there is a built-in virtual assistant Siri on the iPhone, many people prefer using Google Assistant. There is absolutely no problem with that. If you own an iPhone 8 or later, running iOS 14 or later, you can quickly activate the Google virtual assistant on your iPhone just by touching the back of the device.

The interesting feature above is part of a new accessibility utility introduced by Apple called Back Tap. However, this feature will not be enabled by default, but you have to manually set it up yourself. Just follow the simple operations in this article.

First, if you haven’t already, you’ll need to install the Google Assistant app on your iPhone from the App Store.

Next, you will need to create a shortcut to launch Google Assistant with the query “Hey Google“. To do this, launch the Shortcuts app, which has the icon as described in the illustration below:

After the Shortcuts interface opens, click on the item “My Shortcuts“At the bottom of the screen, then select the option”All Shortcuts“.

On page “All Shortcuts”, Press the plus button (+) in the upper right corner of the screen.

Next, you will see a screen showing “New Shortcut“. Before doing any further action, please rename the shortcut. Click the three dots button in the blue circle.

When the option table “Details“Appears, tap the text field that appears on the screen and enter the name of the shortcut, such as”Launch Google Assistant“. Then, click on “Done“.

Next, need to assign a specific action to the newly created shortcut, in this case Google Assistant. Click on “Add Action“.

In the task panel that appears, search for the keyword “Hey Google”, Then click on the corresponding result in the list.

You will then see an overview of your new shortcut, which only includes a specific action. Turn off the “Show When Run“, Then click”Done“.

Next, you will need to configure the Back Tap feature to launch the newly created shortcut. Exit the Shortcuts app and go to it Settings.

In Settings, Navigate to Accessibility> Touch, then select “Back Tap“.

In the setting screen “Back Tap“, You will have the option of specifying the act of pressing the back twice (“Double Tap“) Or thrice (“Triple Tap”) To initiate an action. Please select the option you want.

Next, you will see a list of actions that you can activate using this Back Tap feature. Scroll down until you reach the “Shortcuts“. In the list, select “Launch Google Assistant“.

Now exit the setting, then try typing on the back of your phone two or three times (depending on the option you set above). Google Assistant will launch and automatically listen to voice commands.
