How to install a new set of emojis (emoji) on Android

Emoticons (emojis) make conversations come alive because they accurately represent how we feel when we talk.

Because of that, the emojis are constantly being updated and you don’t want to be outdated, either. There are tons of ways to add new emojis to your Android phone, create your own, or even use an icon set from iOS.

In the article below, Make Tech will guide you on how to update the emoji on Android devices.

1. Update to the latest Android version

Every new version of the Android operating system comes with a new set of emojis. Android 11 introduces 117 brand new characters, in addition to more than 2000 redesigned emoji with new emojis.

If your Android device is not up to date, do the following:

  1. In the phone menu, press settings, then select About. In some devices, you need to pass the item Systems. Next, click on the software version, you will know which version of Android your device is running. If not Android 11, continue to follow these steps.
  2. Into the Settings one more time. Choose About Phone and check if any updates are available. Next, click on the update button and select Install. Make sure the machine is connected to Wifi or any Internet.
  3. To check if the update was successful, go to any one of the applications. When typing, look at the Ninja or Black icons for the Android version, both have a new set of emojis that come with a system update.

2. Use Emoji Kitchen

Google’s keyboard app, Gboard, recently added the Emoji Kitchen item. This is a feature that allows users to create combinations for the stickers. Here’s how you create new emojis using this feature.

  1. Open any messaging app. Next, click on any conversation.
  2. Click in the text bar to start typing. Next, press the emoji button (with the smiley face icon). Choose any emoji to activate Emoji Kitchen.
  3. From here, you can see a collection of icons right at the top of the keyboard. Flick through the stickers and choose the one you want to send.

Note that not all messaging apps are compatible with this new Emoji Kitchen feature.

3. Install a new keyboard

Another way to get a new set of emojis to use is to install a third-party Android keyboard.

Just like the emoji keyboards, some of these apps also include an icon dictionary, allowing you to check the meaning of each emoji. What’s more, this app also has predictive functionality and allows you to send stickers and GIFs to social media sites like Snapchat and Instagram.

Here’s how to install a third-party keyboard on a phone:

  1. On the phone menu, select Google Play. In the search bar above, type the keyboard application you want to download.
  2. Next, choose Install. If the keyboard app is not compatible with your device, try another option.
  3. Wait for the download to complete.

These apps are a great alternative to Google’s Gboard keyboard, which can be installed on any phone. Some device manufacturers including Samsung also pre-install their own keyboard, you should check it out.
