How to switch between tabs in full screen in Chrome

Putting tabs in full screen mode is a great way to maximize your display space. However, when in full screen mode, the title bar of the tabs will be hidden. What causes confusion and annoyance when you need to switch back and forth between open tabs.

Many people choose to manually exit full-screen mode, switch tabs, and then re-enable full-screen mode. However, there are a few other ways that are much simpler.

There are four keyboard shortcuts you need to know when switching tabs in Google Chrome in full screen mode.

For Windows, Chrome OS, and Linux, use these shortcuts:

  • Ctrl + 1-8: Use this key combination to switch to a specific numbered tab from the left side. Note that the shortcut will only work with the first 8 tabs open.
  • Ctrl + 9: No matter how many tabs you have open, pressing this key combination will take you to the “farthest” tab from the left.
  • Ctrl + Tab or Ctrl + Page Down: Switch to the next tab on the left.
  • Ctrl + Shift + Tab or Ctrl + Page Up: Switch to the next tab on the right.

On a Mac, use these keyboard shortcuts:

  • Command + 1-8: Use this keyboard combination to switch to a specific tab numbered 1 to 8 from the left. The shortcut will only work with the first 8 tabs open.
  • Command + 9: Regardless of how many tabs you have open, this will take you to the tab furthest from the left.
  • Command + Option + Right Arrow: Switch to the next tab on the left.
  • Command + Option + Left Arrow: Switch to the next tab on the right.
