How to use Focus feature on iOS 15

Focus settings

  • In iOS 15 on your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app.
  • You’ll find Focus right above Screen Time.
  • Clicking on it, you’ll see Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Personal, and Work features. You can also add a custom Focus mode by tapping the + sign in the upper right corner of the screen
  • The “Share Across Devices” feature is enabled by default, you can toggle it off. Focus Mode supports mac, iPad, and Apple Watch with macOS Monterey, iPadOS 15, and watchOS 8.
  • Below that, you have the option to adjust which apps can access Focus Status and how calls work when Focus mode is on.

Now let’s take a closer look at the Focus modes via Work mode:

Mute bells and notifications are key components in Focus mode. In Work mode, you can set up who and what apps are allowed to display notifications and ring tones when you enable focus mode. When you receive a message from someone you care about, you can also enable instant notifications for that user so you don’t miss a story. In addition, you can also set up contacts to be sent emergency notifications.

  • When you first enter Working mode, you will have to set up contacts that are allowed to show notifications. The system will suggest several contacts (if any) and you can also select Allow None to ignore or not set up any contacts.
  • On the next screen, you will have to set up the apps that are allowed to show notifications. The system will also suggest the application and you are also allowed to ignore.
  • Finally, you need to set up the contact and the application is allowed to send emergency notifications or select Not Now to ignore

The screen will now show the Work mode you just set up. Of course, at this screen you can still edit all the items above. In addition, you can further customize such as creating a custom home screen page, hiding notification icons and dimming the lock screen.

Finally, you can also set Focus mode on/off based on schedule, location using Smart Activation option. You can also delete the mode you just set up if you are not satisfied.

Back to the Focus mode main screen, you can create more personalized modes such as driving, exercising, reading… To do this, click on the checkmark icon. + in the upper right corner of the screen.

Using Focus mode

  • When you set up a Focus mode, it will run automatically as you scheduled. If you don’t use Smart Activation, you can enable/disable Focus mode from Control Center.
  • Siri also supports enabling/disabling Focus mode, but it hasn’t been enabled on iOS 15 beta yet

When Focus is turned on, you’ll see the Focus icon (depending on the mode) on the lock screen, notification screen, status bar, and also in Control Center.

After pressing and holding the Focus icon in the lock screen, notification screen, Control Center, you can click to enable/disable focus mode, or tap the three-dot icon to customize the schedule again.
