Wireless charging means you can charge your phone battery without the need for a physical cord. It prevents possible damage to the phone charging port. However, not all phones support wireless charging, the list below will be iPhones that support wireless charging.

What is Qi technology?

Pronounced “chee”, Qi in Chinese means “living energy”. In this case, the word refers to a wireless standard developed and maintained by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC). It determines how much energy is transferred from one device to another without the need for a physical cable.

A coil inside the wireless charging station continuously receives a small amount of power to stay on standby until it detects the receiver coil is inside your iPhone. It will then draw more electricity from the wall outlet.

When the two coils come into contact, they create an alternating electromagnetic field. The iPhone’s receiver coil generates this magnetic field current that is converted into direct current (electrical energy) used by the iPhone’s battery. This whole process is called magnetic induction.

According to WPC, there are more than 3,700 certified products that support Qi technology. If the product supports this technology, you will see the logo on its packaging.

Wireless charging iPhone models have a glass back, allowing their receiver coil to connect to the charging dock’s induction coil.

However, you can use the case and the phone will still charge with music when placed on the wireless charging tray. Avoid cases of magnetic strip devices or RFID chips, such as credit cards, passports, hotel keys, etc., as recharging may damage their functionality. Remove these items before charging your phone or using another protective case.

Wireless charging speed

You might be wondering if wireless charging is faster than wired. The iPhone models listed above support both fast wireless charging (iOS 11.2 or later) and fast wired charging. Wireless charging, however, is significantly slower than wired, as the air conducts electricity less than wires.

If you need a quick charge before leaving home or the office, a wired connection is the best way. However, for overnight or all-day charging while you work, wireless charging shows a bigger benefit.
