Summary of ways to search for emails by specific date and time in Gmail

In the midst of a mess of thousands of different emails that can be in a Gmail account, finding one or more specific gmails can sometimes be a challenge. Fortunately, Gmail supports an extremely useful feature, which is to search emails by date. You can easily find emails you received after or before a specific time, find emails newer or older by a certain date,… with just a few simple steps.

You can search Gmail by date on both desktop and mobile platforms. On your computer, you’ll visit the Gmail website. On mobile, you use the official Gmail app. In addition, you can use search filters by date along with others, making it easier to find emails.

Find emails older than specified date, month or year

To search for emails older than (before) a specified date, month, or year, simply type the following query into Gmail’s search box and press Enter:

older_than:5d

The above query will help you find emails older than 5 days. You can replace the number 5 with any datum you want. In addition, you also replace d equal m for month or y for five, if desired.

Find emails newer than specified date, month or year

To view emails that are newer (before) the specified date, month, or year, you use the following search query:

newer_than:7d

This query will help you to retrieve emails that are more than seven days old. Replace 7 with whatever datetime you want, and replace d equal m for month or y for the year if needed.

(Tips: You are free to combine both search queries”newer_than” and “old_than” to find emails by a more specific timeline. Just separate the queries with a single space).

Find emails received after a specific time period

If you want to find emails that you received after a specific time, use the following query:

after:2021/11/12 to:me

This query retrieves all emails sent to you after November 12, 2021. To include sent emails in search results, delete them. to:me from the query.

Find emails received before a specific date

Gmail also allows you to easily find emails received before a specific date. Use the following query to do that:

before:2021/10/05 to:me

This query will find all emails you received before October 5, 2021. To add sent emails to the search results, delete them. to:me from the query.

Find emails received between specific dates

By combining both search operators “before” and “after”, you can find emails received between two specific timelines. Such as:

after:2021/09/01 before:2021/09/26 to:me

As you can see, the query will find all emails sent to you between September 1, 2021 and September 26, 2021. Remove the section. to:me to find all emails, not just received ones.
