Shutdown timer is a very useful feature available on Windows operating system!

For some reason you cannot shut down your computer immediately, it may be due to work in progress that forces your computer to be active for a period of time to complete.

Or you are Render videos, copying heavy data files, large files, especially guys like me, often hang up at night to download heavy games like PUBG, Grand Theft Auto V or is Battle Field 5….

You can’t wait until the job is done to turn off the computer, which is really inconvenient. Instead, one option, the best solution at the moment is to schedule a shutdown after the job is done.

Some typical applications such as IDM software support shutdown when the file is downloaded. However, in this article I will guide you to schedule a shutdown without using any software. We will always use the features available on the Windows operating system.

#first. Timed shutdown command by command in CMD

On all operating systems from Windows XP to Windows 7, 8 or the latest operating system Windows 10, the shutdown uses the same command:

shutdown –St x

  • shutdown is a shutdown command.
  • -S stands for shutdown above.
  • -t ie time, the time it takes to count down to shutdown.
  • x Here is the shutdown countdown time, in seconds (s).

To run this command, we will use the Windows RUN tool.

Apply in practice, now I will try to turn off the computer after 1 hour.

Perform: Open up the RUN dialog box by pressing a combination of keys Windows + R => and you type the command:

shutdown -s -t 3600

With 3600 is the time it takes to count down the computer in seconds. For example, if I want the computer to turn off after 1 hour, I will get it 60 minutes x 60 seconds = 3600 seconds, like the command above.

In case you calculate the wrong time, or you can shutdown the computer yourself, so you want to cancel the auto shutdown command in CMD, use this command:

shutdown -a

Some of the available time commands you can use are below:

  • Shut down after 5 minutes: shutdown -s -t 300
  • Shut down after 10 minutes: shutdown -s -t 600
  • Shutdown after 15 minutes: shutdown -s -t 900
  • Shut down after 30 minutes: shutdown -s -t 1800
  • Shutdown after 1 hour: shutdown -s -t 3600
  • Shutdown after 2 hours: shutdown -s -t 7200
  • Shutdown after 4 hours: shutdown -s -t 14400

# 3. Timer command to restart the computer

If you want to restart the computer instead of shutting it down, that’s fine, change it -s equal -r, which means Restart to this command is fine.

shutdown -r -t 3600

=> With this command, the computer will automatically restart after 1 hour of use.

# 4. Create timer button to shutdown / restart on Windows

// Applies to Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and Windows 10 operating systems

This way will help you schedule shutdown, restart your computer with just one click, right on your desktop.

To do this, we will use the Shortcut, which is done as follows:

+ Step 1: You right click on the desktop and select New => ShortCut.

+ Step 2: In section Type the location of the item Type the following command:

shutdown -s -t 3600

With 3600 is the time (in seconds) you want the machine to turn off => already Next. Please adjust the number 3600 to suit your needs, here I want to turn off the computer after 1 hour so I leave it.

Similarly, creating a shortcut to shutdown immediately, you just need to type in the command below => then press Enter.

shutdown -s

+ Step 3: Next is to name the Shortcut, whatever you want. I let it be Tắt máy for easy to remember => then click Finish to complete.

+ Step 4: Finished we will have a shutdown icon on the screen like this, you can start using by double-clicking on the icon just created.

Tips: If you want to change the shutdown time, shutdown or restart action, right-click on the Shortcut icon => select Properties => then change the value 3600 in the item Target into what you want.

If you find the default icon is ugly, or not pleasing, you can change it by clicking Change icon => then select the icon you want and click OK => Apply is to be.
