Video calls and meetings are great, but they leave a lot to be desired when it comes to accessibility. Fortunately, Zoom has the ability to create detailed subtitles live in real time during video calls. Make tech will show you how it works.
How to enable subtitles directly on Zoom
First, log in to the Zoom website in your web browser and select Settings on the account page.
Scroll down in section In Meeting (Advanced) and turn on the feature Closed Captioning.
After enabling the feature, a message will appear explaining that you must turn the feature on Save Captions. Click the button Enable to do that.
Next, in the Closed Captioning section, there is a checkbox that says “Enable live transcription service to show transcript on the side panel in-meeting“. Check the box and select Save.
Live subtitles are now activated in your account. They will show up every time you host a meeting, a voice call on Zoom.
How to use live subtitles in Zoom Meetings
Once you’ve enabled captions directly on your account, using them in a meeting is straightforward. However, you need to be the host of that call. Live subtitles can be enabled from desktop apps on Windows, macOS, and Linux as well as from Android, iPhone and iPad apps.
On someone else’s computer, click the button Live Transcript on the toolbar.
A menu will open with several options. For live subtitles, select Enable Auto -Transcript.
The text will appear below the Zoom window.
In the phone app, click menu 3 ellipses at the bottom of the toolbar.
Next, choose Enable Live Transcript from the menu.
Text will appear below the video.
