How to enable Resilient File System (ReFS) in Windows 10

#first. Learn about Microsoft’s ReFS file system

As I just said, Resilient File System (ReFS) is a new file system created by the father of the Windows operating system, appearing for the first time on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 operating systems.

It is designed to ensure reliability and maximize data on storage devices even if they have hardware failure.

Below are some of the features of ReFS:

– Supports large data volumes up to 1.2 trillion Terabytes.

– The maximum file size is 16 million Terabytes.

Integrity: ReFS is able to store and protect our data from common errors that can cause data loss.

If any errors occur, ReFS can detect when using Storage Spaces, it will automatically find and fix them.

Application compatibility : Maintains support for the NTFS features, because this format is being used very commonly on computers.

To maximize AppCompat, ReFS supports a subset of NTFS features, plus the Win32 API.

Data stored on ReFS drives can be easily accessed using File Explorer (Windows + E), or other software available on operating systems.

#2. How to enable ReFS on Windows 10

First appeared on Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012, and of course ReFS still supports Windows 10 operating system, but by default it will be disabled.

Note: But before you do, you need to back up the entire system Registry because in this article we will edit and move to the Windows 10 Registry, so that if you make a mistake and get an error, you can still restore. restore as usual!

Perform:

+ Step 1: First, open Windows Run (Windows + R) => then enter regedit => and press OK to open a familiar Registry editing tool called Registry Editor.

+ Step 2: Please copy, paste the path below into the address box of Registry Editor => and press the key Enter for quick access to the directory FileSystem.

In this folder, right click on the empty box on the right and select New => select DWORD (32-bit) Value to create a new value.

+ Step 3: You name this new value RefsDisableLastAccessUpdate

If the creation is not in time, you can right click on the current name (for example New Value #1) => then select the line Rename to change the name properly.

After you correct the name, double-click on the value RefsDisableLastAccessUpdate to edit, in the cell:

  • Value data remodeled into 1.
  • Base then leave it as default Hexadecimal

+ Step 4: Continue to find and access the key MiniNT follow the following path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE SYSTEM CurrentControlSet Control

If MiniNT If not available, right-click on the folder Control => then select New => select Key and name it MiniNT.

+ Step 5: After that MiniNT then you proceed to create a value DWORD (32-bit) new by right clicking on the empty box to the right of this folder => and selecting New => DWORD (32-bit) Value.

+ Step 6: Name the value you just created AllowRefsFormatOverNonmirrorVolume => Then double click on this value, and set the following:

  • Value Data: Fix the number 0 Fort 1 to activate.
  • Base: You still leave it Hexadecimal

=> Then press OK is done.

+ Step 7: Now close the Registry and restart your computer for the above changes to take effect.

Then create a new partition or plug in any external storage device (eg USB) => and then proceed to format (Format) again according to ReFS style.

Finally, you can check the file format by right clicking on the partition or just formatted USB => and selecting Properties.

At the window Properties, in the General tab you look down File system if you see it ReFS is OK.
