Page numbers can be used to automatically number each page in a document. They come in a variety of number formats and can be customized to fit your needs. Page numbers are usually placed in the header, footer or side margins. When you need to number some pages differently, Microsoft Word allows you to start over numbering the pages.
How to add page numbers
Word can automatically label each page with a page number and place it in the header, footer, or side margins. If you currently have a header or footer, it will be removed and replaced with the page number.
1. On the tab Insertclick command Page Number.
2. Open menu Top of Page, Bottom of Page, or Page Marginsdepending on where you want the page numbers to be placed, and then select the desired header style.
3. The page number will appear.
4. Press the key Esc to lock header and footer.
5. If you need to make any changes to your page numbers, simply double-click the header or footer to unlock it.
If you created the page number in the side margin, it is still considered part of the header or footer. You will not be able to select the page number unless the header or footer is selected.
How to add page numbers to an existing header or footer
If you already have a header or footer and want to add page numbers to it, Word has the option to automatically insert page numbers into the existing header or footer. The example will add the page number to the header of the document.
1. Double-click anywhere on the header or footer to unlock it.
2. On the tab Thiết kếclick command Page Number. In the menu that appears, hover over Current Position and select the desired page numbering style.
3. The page number will appear.
4. When you’re done, press the . key Esc.
How to hide page number on first page
In some documents, you may not want the first page to display the page number. You can hide the first page number without affecting the rest of the pages.
1. Double-click the header or footer to unlock it.
2. From tab Thiết kếput a check mark next to Different First Page. The header and footer will disappear from the first page. If you want, you can enter new content in the header or footer and it will only affect the first page.
If you can’t choose Different First Page, possibly because an object in the header or footer has been selected. Click an empty area in the header or footer to make sure nothing is selected.
How to restart page numbering
Word allows you to restart page numbering on any page in the document. You can do this by inserting a section break and selecting the number you want to restart numbering. The example will restart page numbering for section Works Cited in the document.
1. Place the insertion point at the top of the page where you want to restart page numbering. If there is text on the page, place the insertion point at the beginning of the text.
2. Select tab Layoutthen click command Breaks. Choose Next Page from the drop-down menu that appears.
3. A section break will be added to the document.
4. Double-click the header or footer containing the page number you want to restart.
5. Click command Page Number. In the menu that appears, select Format Page Numbers.
6. A dialog box will appear. Click the button Start at:. By default, it will start from first. If you want, you can change the number. When you’re done, click OK.
7. Page numbering will start again.
