iOS 15.4 was released earlier than expected, adding Face ID unlocking when the user is wearing a mask.
Initially, version 15.4 was expected to be released on March 18, the same day as the iPhone SE 2022 and the new blue iPhone 13 will be available on the market. However, users can now download the update to their phones from iPhone 6s onwards.
After installation, users must register Face ID again to activate the mask unlock feature. Practical experience shows that Face ID recognizes and unlocks quickly when the face is covered with both the nose and mouth with a mask and wearing glasses. However, when wearing a hat or wearing sunglasses, the feature does not work effectively because the eyes are difficult to detect.
Apple also warns that the Face ID feature with a mask will be less accurate than usual, and only works on iPhone 12 and later. Older versions like iPhone X or iPhone 11 do not use this feature.
Apple also upgraded a new anti-tracking feature for AirTag on its Find My app. Meanwhile, Siri voice assistant improved with a more neutral voice, and can provide date and time information even without the Internet.
Bugs on previous iOS versions such as the keyboard inserting dots between numbers, photos and videos that can’t be synced to iCloud… have also been fixed on the new update.
Along with iOS 15.4, Apple also released iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3 with new Universal Control support. This feature allows users to use their Mac’s keyboard and mouse to control their iPad completely wirelessly, like dragging and dropping files from iPad to Mac and vice versa.
